چکیده

I examine some of the evidence relevant to the idea that high-velocity clouds (HVCs) are gas clouds distributed throughout the Local Group, as proposed by Blitz et al. (1999) and Braun & Burton (1999). This model makes several predictions: a) the clouds have low metallicities; b) there should be no detectable Hα emission; c) analogues near other galaxies should exist; and d) many faint HVCs in the region around M 31 can be found. Low metallicities are indeed found in several HVCs, although they are also expected in several other models. Hα emission detected in most HVCs and, when examined more closely, distant (D>200 kpc) HVCs should be almost fully ionized, implying that most HVCs with H I must lie near the Milky Way. No clear extragalactic analogues have been found, even though the current data appear sensitive enough. The final prediction (d) has not yet been tested. On balance there appears to be no strong evidence for neutral gas clouds distributed throughout the Local Group, but there may be many such clouds within 100 or so kpc from the Milky Way (and M 31). On the other hand, some (but not all) of the high-velocity O VI recently discovered may originate in hot gas distributed throughout the Local Group.

Neutral Hydrogen and the Missing Satellites of the Local Group

We present a comparison of the leftover satellites at z=0 in a cold dark matter dominated simulation of the formation of the Local Group to the distribution of observed neutral hydrogen high-velocity clouds and compact high-velocity clouds. The ∼2000 leftover satellites in the simulation have dark matter masses which range between 0.5 to 10 × 10 9 M ⊙ , sizes between 3 to 30 kpc, and distances ...

High–Velocity Clouds: Building Blocks of the Local Group

We suggest that the high–velocity clouds (HVCs) are large clouds, with typical diameters of 25 kpc and containing 5×107 solar masses of neutral gas and 3×108 solar masses of dark matter, falling onto the Local Group; altogether the HVCs contain 10 solar masses of neutral gas. Our reexamination of the Local–Group hypothesis for the HVCs connects their properties to the hierarchical structure for...

Constraints on the Space Density of Extragalactic HVCs

High Velocity Clouds (HVCs) have recently attracted renewed attention as being long lived, massive dark matter dominated clouds of primordial composition distributed throughout the Local Group. In this picture the HVCs would contain a few ×10 M⊙ of H i and would be at distances of a few hundred kpc to 1.5 Mpc from the Local Group barycenter. If this extragalactic interpretation of HVCs is true,...

We present the results of a Parkes Multibeam HI survey of six loose groups of galaxies analogous to the Local Group. This survey was sensitive to HI-rich objects in these groups to below 10M⊙ of HI, and was designed to search for low mass, gas-rich satellite galaxies and potential analogs to the high-velocity clouds seen around the Milky Way. This survey detected a total of 79 HIrich objects as...

Where Are the High-velocity Clouds in Local Group Analogs?

High-velocity clouds (HVCs) are clouds of H i seen around the Milky Way with velocities inconsistent with Galactic rotation; they have unknown distances and masses and controversial origins. One possibility is that HVCs are associated with the small dark matter halos seen in models of galaxy formation and distributed at distances of 150 kpc to 1 Mpc. We report on our attempts to detect the anal...
